THE DATA ON HOME BIRTHS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Home births have become an increasingly popular option for women in the United States who wish to give birth outside of a hospital setting.

However, home birth rates in the US are still relatively low compared to other countries. Here are some key statistics on home births in the United States:

  1. In 2020, the home birth rate was 1.6% of all births in the United States.

  2. The home birth rate has increased slightly over the past decade. In 2010, the home birth rate was 1.26%.

  3. Women who choose to give birth at home tend to be older, more educated, and more likely to have had previous children.

  4. The rate of home births varies by state. In 2020, the highest rates of home births were in Montana (8.3%), Oregon (5.3%), and Vermont (5.1%), while the lowest rates were in Mississippi (0.2%), Louisiana (0.3%), and Arkansas (0.4%).

  5. The safety of home births is a topic of debate among healthcare professionals. While studies have found that home births for low-risk women can be as safe as hospital births, there is a higher risk of neonatal death for high-risk women who choose home birth.

  6. The availability of home birth midwives varies by state. In some states, certified professional midwives (CPMs) are licensed to attend home births, while in others, they are not recognized or licensed.

In conclusion, home births are still a relatively rare occurrence in the United States, accounting for only 1.6% of all births in 2020. The rate of home births varies by state, and women who choose to give birth at home tend to be older, more educated, and more likely to have had previous children. While home births can be as safe as hospital births for low-risk women, the safety of home births for high-risk women is a topic of debate. The availability of home birth midwives also varies by state.
